Added Yarn in Cut Velvet: What Extra GSM Does and Does Not Tell You

273-6 raised-yarn wave fabric product reference

An added-yarn option changes the material being developed, so review its final weight and handle on the complete sample. Our cut-velvet route overview, based on the catalogue, describes an optional addition of 30 grams of yarn per square metre for a fuller fabric, subject to the selected base and finish. We treat that as a route to discuss and sample, not as a promise that every design gains the same thickness, softness or performance.

What does an extra 30 GSM actually describe?

An extra 30 GSM describes an additional 30 grams per square metre on the stated basis. GSM measures mass per area, not pile height, softness or a percentage change. For our added-yarn option, ask which base and finish the description refers to before comparing it with another sample.

The catalogue identifies 273-6 Raised-Yarn Wavy Jacquard as a current reference for the added-yarn direction. Its listed finished weight belongs to that reference. It should not be treated as a universal starting weight for the entire cut-velvet range.

Look at the raised wave and surrounding areas in this product photograph. The image helps identify the reference being discussed.

It does not show a controlled pair of standard and added-yarn versions, and it cannot quantify a change in handle. A meaningful comparison needs identified physical samples.

Why is added weight different from the finished specification?

Added yarn is a development option; the finished specification describes the complete material agreed for supply. Establish whether the stated GSM includes backing and finishing. Only then can a buyer compare the same specification basis across versions.

An arithmetic example can clarify the unit without predicting a product: if an agreed reference mass is B grams per square metre, adding 30 grams per square metre gives B + 30 for that stated basis. The calculation alone cannot establish the final supplied specification when the base, backing or finish also changes. The selected sample and its confirmed description must resolve that.

Term in the discussion What it tells you What still needs checking
Added-yarn option A proposed construction change Whether it is appropriate for the selected pattern
GSM Mass per square metre The measurement basis and finished specification
Fuller handle An intended tactile direction Whether the actual sample feels right for the application
Thickness A separate dimensional property Its value and relevant measurement conditions if required
Performance Behaviour under a specified requirement Evidence for the exact construction and intended use

Do not use extra GSM as a shortcut for durability or a guaranteed improvement. Those questions require their own evidence.

How should the handle comparison be organised?

To evaluate an added-yarn option, label the available sample versions and record their base, backing, finish and colourway. A comparison isolates the yarn change only when the other relevant factors remain comparable. Different combinations can still support selection, but not a claim that yarn alone caused the preferred feel.

Handle both samples in comparable conditions. Describe what matters for the product: the feel against the hand, the way the material folds, or its suitability for the maker's proposed assembly. Specific observations are more useful than calling one version “better.”

When could a fuller fabric be the wrong direction?

A fuller added-yarn fabric can be the wrong direction when the finished product also needs a particular fold, drape or closure. Review those requirements together on a representative sample. More mass is not a universal improvement when the assembly needs something else.

Consider a hypothetical cushion brief that asks for more body while retaining an easy-to-turn closure edge. The useful sample request is a matched comparison, not simply the heaviest available material.

Comparison field Version A Version B What the buyer can infer
Base construction Record selected base Confirm whether unchanged A change limits attribution to added yarn alone
Backing and finish Record both Confirm whether unchanged Keep the measurement and handling basis comparable
Added-yarn option Identify the reference version Identify the proposed option Establish which change is under discussion
Handling and assembly Record fold and closure observations Record the same observations Decide whether the fuller direction suits the actual cover
A comparison record keeps base, backing and finish identified before interpreting handling and assembly observations.
A comparison record keeps base, backing and finish identified before interpreting handling and assembly observations. This is an illustrative teaching model.

If B feels fuller but its turned edge is less appropriate for this design, the selection remains open. The team can prefer A, discuss a different combination or revise the assembly. That is a more useful result than ranking the samples by GSM alone. These are assumed decision conditions; no A/B trial or result is being claimed for 273-6.

Likewise, a buyer seeking a particular drape should assess that directly rather than selecting a weight alone. The design, handle and making requirements need to work together. A sample that feels appealing as a flat piece may still need review in the proposed form.

Our cut-velvet fabric page connects added yarn with the other route choices. The collection remains the design-selection entry point.

What should an added-yarn enquiry include?

An added-yarn enquiry should state the exact fabric reference, intended application and change in handle sought. Identify any current sample and describe the specific shortcoming: insufficient body, an unwanted fold or another observable issue. Add the proposed assembly, quantity and required evidence.

Use WhatsApp RFQ to discuss whether the option fits the selected pattern and what a useful sample comparison would contain. We confirm the final specification and route-specific terms directly. The aim is an appropriate finished fabric, with the added-yarn choice evaluated as one part of that decision.
